Celebrating Father's Day 2024 with a 'Kisses Machine'

A catapult made of lolly sticks and rubber bands with paper kisses next to it for celebrating Father's Day 2024

Today is Father’s Day in the UK, and this year we  wanted to go beyond the usual cards and gifts to express our affection (nothing related to the fact that we were bored and had nothing better to do). So we decided to pull off the ultimate DIY gift – a ‘kisses machine.’

The Birth of the 'Kisses Machine'

It all began a few days ago when Mimi and I were on our way to pre-school, casually chatting about the upcoming Father’s Day and how were we going to show appreciation and love to Pedro for being such a caring father. We started by asking ourselves, “What does he love more than anything in the world?” Without hesitation, Mimi replied, “Kisses.” I then asked if there was a way for him to have our kisses all the time, even when he goes to work. That’s when Mimi came up with a wonderfully creative idea – a ‘kisses machine.’

She wanted to make something special and unique, so we decided to build a catapult that projects paper kisses. After a brief pause to appreciate her genius, we got to work. After all, what says “I love you, Dad” better than a homemade catapult? It was a fun and memorable project that brought smiles and laughter to our home.

Building the 'Kisses Machine'

Our morning was filled with giggles, glue mishaps, and a few “engineering challenges”, but ultimately teamwork prevailed and we conquered the beast. Here’s how we did it:

Materials Needed:

  • 11 Lolly sticks
  • 4 Rubber bands
  • A lid, cap or spoon
  • Glue
  • Pink or red lipstick
  • Paper and scissors
  • Tissue paper or anything that can be shaped into small spheres.

Steps:

1. Construct the Catapult Base: We glued together popsicle sticks to create a sturdy base and secured them with rubber bands.

2. Attach the lid, cap or spoon: We glued a plastic cap to the end of the catapult, ensuring it could pivot and launch our paper kisses.

3. Make the Paper Kisses: Mimi printed several pink lipstick kisses in a white piece of paper and then cut them out. We each ripped a few pieces of pink tissue paper and formed them into tiny spheres. Then proceeded to glue the kisses into the spheres. If you’re feeling extra crafty you can also add love messages to each one.

The Grand Unveiling

With our ‘kisses machine’ ready, we called in the guest of honour into the living room. Mimi eagerly demonstrated how her masterpiece worked, launching paper kisses across the room to Pedro, while Lou attempted to catch one in hopes of a quick “snack”. By the end, the room was filled with paper kisses, giggles, and one very happy dad. It was a beautiful moment that captured the essence of Father’s Day – celebrating love, creativity, and family bonds.

A Day to Remember

This Father’s Day, our ‘kisses machine’ was a hit. It wasn’t just about the inventive gift; it was about the laughter, the teamwork, and the love that filled our home. It was a reminder that the best gifts come from the heart and that creativity and effort can turn any day into something extraordinary. This was a day we’ll talk about for years – the day Dad got bombarded with kisses, quite literally.

To all the amazing dads out there, Happy Father’s Day 2024! May your day be filled with love, joy, and plenty of kisses.
