Our Day Foraging With Kids

Lately, the girls and I have been embracing the crisp autumn air by going on little foraging adventures in search of one of nature’s hidden gems: mushrooms! Our most recent trip to the forest turned into a whole day of learning, creating, and bonding – the kind of day that perfectly captures what intentional parenting is all about.

It all began with an early start, Mimi’s favourite straw purse in hand, and excited giggles as we set off into the woods. Mimi, took the lead, pointing out trees and spotting little mushroom families nestled against fallen logs. Lou, on the other hand, had fallen asleep on the bike ride to the woods, completely relaxed by the gentle rustle of leaves and the soft breeze against her cheeks. She stayed asleep for the first part of our foraging adventure, but when she finally woke up, she was full of energy. Not one to miss out on the fun, she was quick to follow, her little feet bouncing along as we ventured deeper into the forest.

There’s something magical about foraging with kids, isn’t there? The way the forest quiets as you focus on the ground, carefully searching for these tiny treasures. Every discovery – whether it was a towering toadstool or a tiny mushroom tucked away under leaves – sparked conversation. We marvelled at the different shapes, colours, and textures, and of course, Mimi had to sing about each one!

On our trip, we did come across a few poisonous mushrooms, so it’s crucial to be extra cautious. Make sure to follow the safety tips I’ve included later in the post to keep your foraging adventures safe and fun!

After a bit of foraging, we found a sunny spot to settle down for a snack and some reading. We’ve been enjoying a few mushroom-themed books lately, and it felt so fitting to dive into them surrounded by the very subject we were reading about (our favourite reads here).

As we turned the pages, the girls’ imaginations took flight.  I handed them each a little sketchpad, and we spent a quiet moment drawing the mushrooms we’d found. Mimi took great care with her mushroom sketch, while Lou, in her cheeky way, decided to draw her own version – abstract style, of course!

Back Home: Crafting Mushrooms After Foraging With Kids

Once we were satisfied with our drawings (and our snacks of brioche and cheese), we packed up and headed home. But the fun wasn’t over! When we returned, we decided to keep the mushroom magic going by creating our own mushrooms using egg cartons.

Inspired by Baker Ross  “Egg Box Toadstools”, we cut the cartons into mushroom shapes, then spent the afternoon painting them. It was wonderful to see how engaged they were, letting their imaginations take the lead and turning such a simple material into something extraordinary.

Educational Takeaways from Foraging with Kids

Foraging with kids for mushrooms isn’t just a fun outdoor activity – it’s also a fantastic learning opportunity for children. Through exploring the world of fungi, kids can develop an early love for science and nature. Here are some key educational takeaways that make foraging and crafting mushrooms an excellent entry point for learning:

1. Fungi as Decomposers: Nature’s Recyclers

One of the most fascinating roles fungi play in our ecosystem is that of decomposers. Mushrooms help break down organic material like fallen leaves, wood, and plants, turning them back into nutrients that enrich the soil. This process helps support plant growth and keeps the forest healthy and thriving.

When foraging with kids, you can explain this in simple terms: “Mushrooms are nature’s cleaners! They take old things like fallen leaves and turn them into food for the trees and plants.” When kids understand the role mushrooms play in recycling nature, they begin to see how everything in the environment is connected, laying the foundation for ecological awareness.

You can also explore this concept and go even further through educational videos. After foraging with kids, sit down with your children and watch “How Mushrooms Clean Up the Planet (and Other Fungi Powers)” by DW Planet A and “You Didn’t Know Mushrooms Could Do All This” by National Geographic on YouTube.

These videos are not only fascinating but will also deepen their understanding of the incredible role fungi play in our world. Your kids might be a bit too young to appreciate The Last of Us – but hey, it’s never too early to learn about the friendly side of fungi!

2. Learning through Observation

Foraging with kids provides a natural setting to sharpen children’s observational skills. By searching for mushrooms, they learn to pay close attention to their surroundings, look for details, and differentiate between various shapes, sizes, and colours. This kind of focused observation is a core skill in both science and everyday problem-solving.

Encourage your children to look at the unique features of each mushroom they find – “Is this one tall or short? What colour is it? Does it have spots?” By asking these questions when foraging with kids, you’re helping them develop their critical thinking skills as they make comparisons and draw conclusions about the natural world.

3. Connecting Foraging with Kids to Creativity

After foraging with kids and observing mushrooms in the wild, you can reinforce their learning by bringing that inspiration into your home through crafts. By creating mushrooms out of egg cartons or drawing them in nature, children translate what they’ve seen into their own creative expression. This reinforces both their understanding and their imagination.

Children learn that nature can inspire creativity, and that learning is not just about facts – it’s about exploring the world with curiosity. When they see how their craft mushrooms resemble the real ones they foraged, it creates a tangible connection between nature, observation, and creative play.

By turning a simple foraging trip into an opportunity for intentional learning, you can open up a world of science and creativity for your little ones – making it an adventure they’ll remember and learn from for years to come.

Safety Tips for Foraging with Kids

Foraging with kids is a wonderful way to connect with nature, but it’s important to keep safety in mind, especially with little ones in tow. Here are some practical tips to make your next foraging adventure both fun and safe:

1. Identifying Safe vs. Harmful Mushrooms

One of the first rules of mushroom foraging is to never eat anything unless you’re absolutely sure it’s safe. This is a great opportunity to teach children about caution and respect for nature. Show them how to observe mushrooms without touching, and explain why some mushrooms can be harmful.  You might even want to bring along gloves and a simple mushroom identification guide suited for kids – something visual that makes learning fun.

For younger children, a good rule of thumb is to remind them, “Look, but don’t touch”. When we first started foraging, Mimi and Lou were reminded of this. Now, they both know not to touch their faces after handling mushrooms (although with Lou, all eyes still need to be on her as the temptation can be a bit too much!). They’ve also learned that washing our hands afterwards is non-negotiable.

A good way to reinforce the no touch rule is to keep their hands busy – whether it’s with a sketchpad, stick wands, or helping with other tasks – so they’re less likely to grab things out of curiosity.

2. Foraging Etiquette

It’s important to foster a sense of respect for the environment while foraging with kids. Explain to your children why it’s crucial to stay on marked paths, both for their safety and to protect fragile ecosystems. In some areas, certain mushrooms or plants may be endangered, so it’s a great time to talk about why we don’t pick everything we see. Encourage your children to be mindful of what they collect and only take what’s needed.

You can turn this into a game by asking them to “leave the forest as they found it,” teaching them about stewardship of the natural world.

3. What to Pack

Foraging with kids requires a bit of preparation to keep the experience smooth and enjoyable. Here’s a list of essentials to consider bringing:

  • Water and Snacks: Little adventurers get thirsty and hungry quickly, so be sure to pack plenty of water and easy-to-eat snacks.
  • Wipes or Hand Sanitiser: For cleaning little hands after touching dirt or plants (but hopefully not mushrooms!).
  • Sketchpads and Pencils: These are great for occupying kids and getting them involved by drawing what they find. It’s also a fun way to bring the forest back home with you.
  • A Small Identification Guide: If your children are a bit older, consider bringing along a child-friendly mushroom guide so they can help you identify what you find. This can make the foraging adventure feel like a real treasure hunt.
  • Comfortable Clothes and Sturdy Shoes: Make sure everyone is dressed appropriately for the woods, including layers for changing weather, sturdy shoes, and hats to protect from the sun or drizzle.

With these tips in mind, your foraging with kids trip can be both a safe and magical adventure, teaching your children about the wonders of nature while ensuring everyone has a fun (and incident-free) day out!

Conclusion

Our mushroom adventure was more than just a day out; it was a reminder of how much joy we can create when we slow down and embrace the simple things. From the forest walk to the afternoon of crafting, every part of the day offered new ways for the girls to learn, explore, and express themselves.

The best part? We didn’t just make memories; we now have a little mushroom village on our windowsill, a sweet reminder of the magic of intentional play.

Whether it’s foraging with kids in the woods or crafting at the kitchen table, I hope this inspires you to take a moment to create something special with your little ones. After all, it’s the everyday adventures that often become the most cherished memories.
